What is English First?

English First is a national, non-profit grassroots lobbying organization founded in 1986. Our goals are simple:

Over 150,000 concerned Americans have joined English First. They believe this nation of immigrants must be able to talk to each other. They believe that the English language unites America. They are tired of seeing the government use their tax money to divide Americans on the basis of language or ancestry.

English First is based in Springfield, Virginia--just outside the Washington, D.C. Beltway. This location allows English First easy access to Congress to advance our lobbying goals

English First's aggressive lobbying staff is relied on by Members of Congress for information and assistance. As the only pro-English group to testify against bilingual ballots in 1992 and the only pro-English group to lead the fight against bilingual education in 1994, English First is widely respected among both official and unofficial Washington.

English First is not only YOUR voice on Capitol Hill; but English First is also active in keeping you aware of developments that affect America's common language in your state capital, the federal and state bureaucracy and even in other nations.

English First is assisted by the English First Foundation and the English First Political Victory Fund. English First Foundation is second to none in its efforts to educate the public on English issues and in its critical research efforts on English-related topics. English First Foundation makes books available to school libraries at no cost and issues periodic issue briefs synthesizing the best available research on key issues. English First Political Victory Fund makes sure your voice is heard at election time, weighing in on behalf of pro-English candidates across the United States.

English First wants to represent you, too.
