U.S. Education Secretary Riley has threatened a federal investigation.

President Clinton spoke against Prop. 227 on May 1, 1998. There was also a White House Briefing which included the issue on April 27, 1998.

U.S. Congress

Legislation has been introduced by Congressman Frank Riggs and House Majority Whip Tom DeLay which would eliminate any federal bilingual education mandate.

H.R. 3892 has been passed in Subcommittee. The Clinton Administration is opposed to the bill. Congress has held two hearings on bilingual education, one in Southern California and one in Washington, D.C.
