Well done.

Given that the White House, a minority of Senate Republicans and nearly all Senate Democrats were all foresquare for the amnesty bill, the wonder is not that we lost the morning but that we managed to get so close.

What is not generally known is that the White House had some special influence upon certain key Republican Senators:

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Kentucky)
Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell's wife, Elaine Chao, serves the Bush Administration's Secretary of Labor. McConnell is up for reelection in 2008.

Senator Ted Stevens (Alaska)
His son,and likely successor, is under FBI investigation. His Senate aides are being interviewed too.
